In the processing of precision parts, cutting tools largely limit product quality and productivity. Although the cutting principle of CNC turning is basically the same as that of ordinary lathes, due to the requirements of CNC processing characteristics, when choosing tools, especially the geometric parameters of the parts to be cut, the shape of the cutting edge must be specially treated. Only in this way can the processing requirements of CNC turning be met and the advantages of CNC lathes be fully exerted.
When conducting processing, it is essential to pay attention to the requirements of the CNC lathe for the cutting tools. So, what are the requirements for the cutting tools of the CNC lathe?
1. High strength. To adapt to the large cutting depth and rapid feed of the cutting tool during rough machining or when processing parts with high-hardness materials, the cutting tool must have high strength. For long-handled tools (such as deep hole turning tools), it should also have better anti-vibration performance.
2. High precision. To meet the requirements of high precision and automatic tool changing in CNC machining, both the cutting tools and their tool holders must have high precision.
3. The cutting and feed speeds are very high. To enhance production efficiency and meet the requirements of certain special processing, cutting tools should be capable of meeting the demands of high cutting speeds. For instance, when polycrystalline diamond composite turning tools are used to process glass or carbon fiber composites, the cutting speed can reach up to 100M/min or even higher.
4. High reliability. To ensure that the smooth processing of precision parts is not affected by damage and potential defects other than the cutting tool, this cutting tool and its combined accessories must have good reliability and strong adaptability.
5. Long service life. Continuous wear of the cutting tool during the cutting process will lead to changes in the processed dimensions. As the tool wears out, the cutting edge (or tool tip) will become blunt, which will increase the cutting resistance and greatly improve the surface accuracy of the machined parts. A decline will accelerate tool wear and create a vicious cycle.
6. Good cutting and chip removal performance. Effective chip breaking and chip removal performance is of great significance for ensuring the smooth and safe operation of CNC lathes.
Therefore, in the processing of precision parts, whether it is rough machining, finish machining or special machining, the cutting tools should have a longer service life than ordinary lathes to minimize the frequency of tool replacement or grinding as well as tool setting. To ensure the processing quality of parts and improve production efficiency, tools with a long service life can complete at least 1-2 shifts of processing.
